Subject: Re: The danger of herbal medicines

I have unfortunately been unable to access the link provided so I am at a loss as to what it is really about and am curious. But...........anyway

>>>>>The irony is that many of us so-called worldly Caribbean folks are now pooh-poohing those same natural herbs, but are gladly paying ridiculous prices for them when Walgreen sells them over the counter in the form of chemical pills.<<<<<<

Therein lies the danger, Tony, because some of us are combining the over-the-counter synthetic medicine with the natural or "bush tea". This could lead to many complications including an overdosing effect. Also we have to remember that some pharmaceutical companies may be using some of the very same herbs for the bases of their medicines - some of these may be taken from forests of other countries and may be what we take but are labelled differently due to location.

In taking the natural herbs by itself, are we taking the correct amounts. Suppose that just like with other man-made medicines we overdose or are damaging other organs in the process. Do we really know?

Another thing is that you cannot be eating karayle/corilee (sp) and then drink the throw off water as well to "cleanse the blood" or bring down the blood pressure.

As most of us know if you are on certain medications do not use grapefruit.

One of my favourite cousins sent me some bush for cold/fever. I was sick so I pulled out the package. What I saw made me put it right back - there was about every herb under the sun in one bundle. I say who me - next thing my heart gone galloping like a horse in Seamoon?

BTW, I will take some Sparrow music any day. Each day is like a new day and a new laugh even if you heard it every day of your life.

Tony, in the late 60's to early 70's I am quite sure there was a Catholic Church group in Trinidad that accompanied its music with steelband. Our O'Clara went down to Trinidad for a while and got all fired up about it. They sang from the Praise the Lord book - like "Sing Out My Soul to the Lord" - really nice. When O'C came back he started a youthful Catholic choir with the modern songs - well he used the organ because he did not have a steelband. Oh yes! O'C was quite the talent of the day. If I remember correctly, his choir eventually turned into what was the start of the Old Youthquake under Teacher Elsia.
